Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th day of August on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse, so she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread social activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially aware and showed her how to use the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and brought up. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked look over the rubbish at the home that belonged to a member of the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the public relations industry. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
